Dillsburg only charges for what you order, I bought many 1 foot pieces from them. Of course their is a good price break per/foot if you can use a full random length of a particular size or multiple random lengths. For instance if ordering 150' of a particular size they will send you 6 full lengths plus a cut piece to make the total. You will get the cheapest price for the entire 150'. My order for fuselage tubing from Dillsburg cost about $160 to ship to California. I have been very happy with their tubing, their service, and the price of their materials. I specifically said I was happy with their tubing, because I haven't been too pleased with the sheet they send me. On two seperate orders, the thicker pieces of sheet, say 0.063 and above have come with curled edges, some of them significantly. I've gotten much nicer pieces, though more expensive, elsewhere. Don't be too worried about buying extra tubing, it's pretty easy to screw up a lot of it. On my first horizontal stab. leading edge, I failed to ensure that I was bending in only one dimension and ended up with a perfecty curved piece that also curved up off the table. There went four feet of tubing that is absolutely no good for anything else. You also need to consider the extra length necessary to apply leverage for bending. To ensure that I don't ruin any more pieces that way, I have taken to applying a piece of masking tape the length of the tube, then marking a centerline on the tape so I can be sure of the plain of my bend. Has worked well so far. +++ #2114 rsmith Subject: Alaska Bushwheels A few days ago, after pounding on ribs for a few days, I felt the need for some motivation. I hopped in the truck and drove 40 miles down the highway to the Alaska Bushwheel "factory" in Eagle River. The "factory" is a three man operation in the owners garage. I watched some tires being made and got to learn quite a bit about them. For the uninitiated the bushwheels are a donut shaped, tubeless tire. They are similar to the old Airstreaks. They are designed to be run at a wide range of pressures depending on what kind of surface you will be landing on. They are made in three sizes: 26x12x6 26# each $2295/pr 29x13x6 33# each $2995/pr 31x13x6 38# each $3395/pr When lined up together, the 26" tires seem to be a lot smaller than the other two. The above prices are for certified aircraft, for experimental use they will custom make them for your intended use and they are a little cheaper. The advantages of the bushwheels over other tires are they are large enough to have great floatation, they are very flexible to minimize shock loads to the gear and fuselage, and they require no adaptors. One thing I learned is that if you are going to be using them on pavement frequently, you can have them made with a harder rubber compound that is only slightly less flexible. Other tires used for tundra tires are designed for much heavier airplanes and are not flexible. If run at lower pressures they will sometimes spin on the wheel and shear the valve stem. The tire molds are interesting. They are machined from a solid block of aluminum. For the 26" tires it cost $32000 in 1986 to have the mold machined by a boeing subcontractor. While I was there a Maule driver from Eastern Oregon was agonizing over which size to get. We had fun swapping Maule lies. I think when the time comes, I will go with the 29". If you are going to get serious about bush flying with the Bearhawk these are the hot item. The price seems prohibitive, but just consider the cost of a new prop and engine rebuild etc. etc. They also have a 8" and 10" tail wheel in the works. Turned out to be a very motivational field trip. +++ #2118 From: budd davisson Subject: Re: Kit Update Kit Update: We had a bunch of sit down meetings at SnF with Bob and all the principals and ironed out enough details that we should be able to post prices on wing components, complete wings, fuselages and complete airframes within 10-14 days. Just hang in there. At any rate, due to the input from the B/H e-group, one of the packages will be ribs and spars only, fully formed and finished. We've been told that we'll have the first wing component kits AND the first complete airframe kits in time for Oshkosh. I'll believe it when I see it, but the wing components will be a slam dunk. We'll have those for sure. We won't have a booth at Oshkosh but will have the back of Bob's Bearhawk full of wing components and probably a trailer somewhere in the parking lot with a full airframe. Getting a booth at this late date is like looking for a hotel room in downtown Oshkosh during the convention. No way, Jose'. Besides, EAA booths are EXPENSIVE!!! Nearly the cost of a complete BH kit. We'll be putting together an info packet, but included in the $12-$15 (that's a guess) kit will be a sample nose rib so you can see the quality. We'll also put up a digital pictorial on a website. We're not going to do the glitzy, typical thing of building a brochure first and then building airplanes. Before anyone sees anything on this project, we're going to have a minimum of 8-12 airframes nearly finished and ready to ship. We won't take deposits until that time either, and those deposits will go into an escrow account, not our checking account. At the beginning, we're also going to depend on word of mouth and internet "viral" marketing to keep the costs down. This is such a good airplane, and the kits are of such high quality and such a good dollar value, we think they'll sell themselves, once a few of them get out there. Besides, we're not trying to de-throne Van (which is impossible, anyway). We just want to get some good airplanes out there and have some fun. I've been around this game long enough that I don't want to see it go the way of so many similar projects, so we're going to crawl very slowly before we even attempt to walk and we'll make no gradiose assumptions or statements. Unfortunately, that means that at the beginning, if interest takes off, the kits will be in short supply. The best definition of good public relations is FIRST doing something and THEN telling people about it and that's going to be our guideline. +++ #2160 From: William & Delinda Johnson Subject: Rod Ends - $12.00 Each at AT2 Surplus I found some rod ends at Sun & Fun for $12.00 each. Still, their prices on sheet aluminum were MUCH more than Wicks. If I have a bad harvest, I buy what I need from Wicks. I've been thrilled with their pricing, shipping and SPEED. From the shipping label, I can see that they pack orders of .025 and .032 2024T3 the same afternoon I place my order. The longest it has taken for the material to arrive at my shop has been 4 days. I consider that super service. The last time I ordered three sheets of aluminum, all 4x12, I only paid $24 for packaging AND freight. Not a scratch on anything, and I ended up with some good "shoots" for future planting. No complaints with Wicks, but Dillsburg's retail price on a sheet of aluminum, without shipping costs, was higher than Wicks "all up". We were in the final throes of signing papers with the Rumanians to biuld the kits when two bucks-up, hands-on airplane builders approached me and said they'd finance the entire project, if I did it in Mexico. We have now formed and financed a company to do just that. The other two principles involved used Mexican labor to build an RV-8 and, you can ask Mark Frederic at Team Rocket to verify this, it was an 8.5 out of 10. Very, very well done. The man who did that work will be the shop foreman down there. We are also bringing him up to the US where we are going to build the first fuselage about an hour from Bob's and do the fuselage jig at the same time. At the same time, we've been invited by Aviat to scrutinize their production line for hints and production ideas. The kits will be built in our own plant just out side of Puebla, Mexico which is 60 miles SE of Mexico City. We are using Van's kits as quality standards, as well as for setting prices. We don't expect to have anything ready to sell until sometime next year, but we'll keep everyone advised. Dillsburg catalogue lists the mill lengths as 17' to 24'. In my order the actuall length ranged from 19' to 22'. As an example, my recent purchase of 0.020" x 4' x 12' 2024-T3 was $128 per sheet. 4' x 8' x 0.018" firewall stainless steel was about $70 per sheet. I got the impression that they were acroaa Canada. Steel tubing can be purchased from Leavens, but it's expensive. Steel tubing can be purchased from Dave Drain in/near TO (Oakville, Scarborough, or someplace). He runs a company called Grass Roots Aviation and advertises in the RAA magazine (you are an RAA member, right? If not, go directly to http://www.inforamp.net/~raac/index.html ;-). He's pretty well priced and can usually match the bigger supply houses on small tubing orders. I'd suggest you plan to buy all the tubing up front as you can buy it in full lengths (20'-22') and have it all shipped by truck. Most vendors will discount the full length prices as there is no cutting. Once you have a bill of materials put together, send it to Wicks, Aircraft Spruce, Dilsburg (very good prices and inventory) and Grass Roots and ask for a quote with a volume discount that includes shipping. Then, order from the cheapest. When I did this exercise in '91, Grass Roots was the cheapest when everything was factored in although there was only something like a $10 difference between them and Dilsburg. Of course, I chose to buy Canadian. Covering and hardware can be purchased from Goulet Aircraft in Edmonton (780)452-4242 or Winnipeg (204)783-8512. I've been very happy with their service and use them a lot. I can usually have my parts quicker by ordering from Edmonton than here locally in Calgary. Since I work the same times that the suppliers do, it can take me a week or two to arrange to pick up a shipment whereas Goulet ships by Greyhound, same-day whose terminal is open to 9PM! I still buy a lot of my hardware from the States, Wicks in particular. I use Aircraft Spruce as a last resort. They have a hard time understanding the terms "ship complete" and "do NOT use UPS". If you are shipping from the States, avoid UPS and use US/Canada Post whenever possible. UPS will ding you an extra $40 on most orders for "brokerage" whereas it's only $7 at the post office. Shipping times are about the same and postage is cheaper than UPS. I've yet to have a lost postal shipment. Anyway, after shipping almost an entire airplane by Canada post to my house, I've learned most of the tricks. Most of this was learned by building the Christavia.
